CHARLOTTE MANN
MANIPULATION IN KNIT
Manipulation in knit is an ongoing project. Inspired by origami, the art of folding paper. This project takes a look at how folds from a paper form can be transferred into knit. With the creative use of plastic and hand dyed cotton the collection is starting to come together with the end product focusing on exterior shelters with a coloured, folded exterior to create a feeling of warmth and safety.

INITIAL SAMPLES
Initial sampling was a project in itself starting in 2020 with an 8 week project exploring medium and the challenges that come with working from home.
Starting with origami and drawings which were then developed into knit samples. Exploring the use of plastic in a creative way with adding heat and folds to create forms.
The brightness of the white plastic is complimented with white cotton, without the distraction of colour this work solely focuses on shape and form.

SAMPLE DEVELOPMENT
The current working element in this ongoing project is sampling. After experimenting with folds I started adding colour to my samples, with the palette being inspired by a painting of an old item of clothing. Using black plastic as a base and hand dyed cottons as the working colour element and using knit techniques such as intarsia and darts to create the sections of colour.
